The definition of used HDD:
|
“Used” includes goods that are in “open box” condition as well as “pre-owned”
“Pre-owned” covers items used by others or pulled from a working device |
The Recertification/Refurbishment SOP takes the following steps to guarantee functionality and reliability:
|
Stage 1 - Visual inspection: |
- To ensure the HDD does not have physical damage or evidence of tampering
- To identify any burned circuitry, scratch marks, or label discrepancies on the HDD
|
Stage 2 - Power-on test: |
- To check for noise which indicates possible critical damages in the HDD head and disk assembly (HDA)
- To screen for a non-functional printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) if HDD fails to spin
|
Stage 3 - DoD 5220-22.M compliant 3-pass data wipe: |
- To ensure all existing data is completely wiped and prevent any confidential data from leaking out
- To ensure a HDD can be reused with high reliability
|
- By screening a HDD not meeting a high health index based on SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology)
- By mapping out all bad blocks and bad sectors to prevent them from future data storage
|
Stage 3 - DoD 5220-22.M compliant 3-pass data wipe: |
- To make it look like new by removing 3rd party stickers, stains, dust and any un-original marking with a final polish of the metal
|
Final stage - packaging |
- Any HDD, successful passing the above process, will then be put in a brand new ESD bag and sealed.
